Trees: Other Trees

Chinese Chestnut

The Chinese Chestnut, `Castanea mollissima,' produces sweet-flavored nuts in the winter that are edible. The outer shell of these nuts is prickly and must be removed. It is a deciduous tree that has moderate water requirements and a fair tolerance to alkali soils and salt, as well as heat, drought and transplanting. Landscapers often plant the Chinese Chestnut as an ornamental tree or a shade or nut tree. Planted in rows, they make a great windbreak.
