Shrubs: Ninebark

Darts Gold Ninebark

The Ninebark Dart's Gold, `Physocarpus opulifolius,' is a very adaptable deciduous shrub. It is named for its broad, three-lobed golden foliage in the spring, which will gradually fade to a pleasant lime green in the summer. It is also commonly grown for its wide, arching branches that are tipped with white flowers that are dusted in pink. Tolerable of dry conditions, Dart's Gold will grow in full sunlight to partial shade. This shrub is fantastic for year round interest, with its golden leaves, white flowers, red fruit and papery bark. It is even attractive during the winter months. It should be pruned to its base in the spring, as this will greatly help to rejuvenate the plant.
