King Henry Viola


The Viola King Henry, `Viola cornuta,' produces edible, deep violet-blue velvety flowers that have bright yellow eyes. This old variety of Viola cannot be outperformed by any of the new ones. In cold climates, the seeds should be planted in the fall for fall, early winter and spring blooms. In warmer climates, early fall planting will produce continuous color from late autumn through spring. This Viola looks striking when planted in mass for a colorful ground cover or planted with bulbs. Its edible flowers can be added to salads or other culinary dishes.
