Shrubs: Hydrangea

Late Panicle Hydrangea

The Hydrangea Late Panicle, `Hydrangea paniculata,' produces clusters of white airy flowers that can reach a length of up to one foot in late August. The mixture of sterile and fertile flowers is less dense, meaning that the clusters are much less likely to begin to droop or tip. During the fall months, these flowers will turn to a bronze color. Each fall, after the blooming period is over, the shrub should be pruned back to no less than 2/3 of the original size. This Hydrangea is hardy, and will not need to be protected during the winter to flower. These shrubs look best when they are kept pruned in order to maintain a thicker base.
