Osage Orange

The Osage Orange Tree, `Maclura pomifera,' will bear inedible fruit that resembles a woody orange. It is native to Midwest and Southeast United States and has bright green summer foliage with a yellow fall color. A yellow-orange dye can be extracted from the wood, and is often used as a substitute for fustic and aniline dyes for arts and industry. It is also known as the hedge apple tree, because it was originally planted in thicket-like hedgerows, before barbed wire was invented.
