Ground Covers: Periwinkle

Periwinkle

The Periwinkle, `Vinca minor,' is also commonly referred to as Trailing Myrtle, Dwarf Periwinkle or Creeping Myrtle. This common species of Periwinkle is one of the most popular and widely planted groundcovers. Its trailing stems have smooth, evergreen leaves that root at the nodes as they trail along the ground. This plant will quickly spread to form an attractive ground cover. Very effective on slopes or banks, this plant can be used to stabilize soils and prevent erosion. This evergreen perennial is identical to Vinca Major, except that it has somewhat smaller flowers.
