The Spirea Renaissance, `Spiraea vanhouttei,' produces arching boughs that blossom in mid to late spring with clusters of snow-white flowers. This variety has improved disease resistance. The flowers are wonderful cut flowers to be added to homemade wreaths. This shrub should be planted in full sunlight. Spireas are distinguished by the size, bloom color and season of bloom. They all have small leaves that grow on fine, twiggy branches. The shrubs also become very drought tolerant once they are established.
