Shumard Oak


The Shurmard Oak Tree, `Quercus shumardii,' is a moderately fast grower that produces acorns every two to four years. The acorn can be used as a source of food for wildlife. This is one of the largest of the southern red oaks. Although not as hardy northward, the Shurmard Oak Tree is suggested as a substitute shade tree for Scarlet Oak. One reason that the Shurmard oak is so popular is due to its fantastic deep, crimson-red fall foliage. This tree has be embraced as a hardy selection for urban areas, and also makes a good lumber tree.
