Trees: Oak

Swamp Chestnut Oak

The Swamp Chestnut Oak Tree, `Quercus michauxii,' is one of the most important timber trees in the South. Baskets are commonly made from its wood, and cows will eat its acorns. This deciduous tree will grow best on moist and wet loamy soils of bottomlands, along streams and borders of swamps. Its leaves vary from four to eight inches in length and are downy beneath and turn a rich crimson in the fall. This is a great shade tree. It is also commonly known as the Basket oak or Cow oak.
