Vernal Witch-hazel

The Vernal Witch-Hazel, `Hamamelis vernalis,' has a rounded habit and typically grows to six to ten feet in height with a somewhat larger spread. This deciduous, winter-flowering shrub produces fragrant, globular bloom clusters with variable colors. Most flower, however, frequently have yellow petals and reddish inner calyxes. Na‹ve American commonly used extract from the leaves, bark and stems for medicine. They were used in external treatment to heal bruises, inflammations and sprains.
