The Washington Hawthorn Tree, `Crataegus phaenopyrum,' produces reddish-purple new foliage that will unfold and gradually change to a lustrous dark green at maturity. The tree grows in a broadly oval to rounded shape, with dense foliage and thorny stems. Its half-inch flowers are white in color, and will bloom in profusion early spring. Its fall color will vary from orange to scarlet to purplish. To form a hedge, plant the trees four to six feet apart. This tree has low water requirements, and shows a very high tolerance to salt and alkali soils.
