White Walnut


The White Walnut Tree, `Juglans cinerea,' is a small to medium sized tree with a short trunk that is divided into a few ascending limbs. These limbs have large spreading, sparsely forked branches. Its smaller branches will tend to bend downwards, and then turn up at their end. This is a fast growing tree, especially as a seedling, but will generally not live any longer than eighty years. It is best known from its rich wood quality and dense shade. It is also known as the Butternut tree.
